Grief and remembrance
After a loss, Famyl helps a family gather the stories, photos, documents and recordings of someone they love in one private place, and talk with an AI companion inspired by them. It is an AI simulation built from what the family adds — not the person, not a way to contact them, and not grief counselling or therapy.
What Famyl can and cannot be
Famyl keeps memories together and lets you revisit them in conversation. Replies are generated by AI from the memories your family has saved; they are not original recordings, and AI can make mistakes or get details wrong.
The companion is designed to say when it does not know something rather than invent personal facts. It never claims to be the real person, and it makes no claims about spirits or speaking with the dead.
Go at your own pace
There is no right time to start. Some families begin with one photo and one story; others gather recordings together over months.
- Start with a few memories: a favourite saying, a recipe, a story everyone retells
- Invite relatives to add their own memories; the owner reviews contributions
- Add an existing voice recording if you have one, with the right to use it
- Pause, edit or delete memories at any time
Consent and control
Creating a companion includes a required consent confirmation. For someone who has died, it should be created by a person with the right to share their memories, image and voice, ideally with the family's agreement. Companions are private by default and shared only with people you invite.
What it costs
Joining and creating a companion are free, and text chat is free subject to fair-use limits. Live voice-and-avatar conversation uses Live Time; new accounts receive introductory minutes, and continued Live use needs a paid plan. Check the pricing page before you commit.
If you are struggling
Famyl is not a substitute for grief counselling, therapy or medical care. If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services; in the US you can call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Talking with people you trust, or a qualified bereavement counsellor, matters more than any app.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the companion really my loved one?
- No. It is an AI companion inspired by them, built from the memories, photos and recordings your family adds. It can be comforting and familiar, but it is a simulation and can make mistakes.
- Can Famyl help with grief?
- Some families find it meaningful to keep stories together and revisit them. Famyl is not grief counselling or therapy, and it does not replace support from people or professionals.
